Fresh start

Easter is here! Easter and spring always remind me of new beginnings. Strategically placed after the gluttonous and materialistic holiday season. Flowers are blooming, the sun is shining, and the birds are chirping. It is a time to start fresh! Rather than giving up an item/thing for lent, I have starting giving up a behavior in my life that I feel needs to be changed or improved. I am not saying giving up something more concrete is bad. But for me, giving up chocolate does nothing for my faith. Using my usual chocolate eating time for devotion might makes more sense, in that it would enrich my faith, but I want something that helps me focus on not just myself, but others around me as well.
My Lenten sacrifice and a daily time of solitude (which can be very difficult in my house!), it is my way of turning focus back where it needs to be in my life. My daily solitude might be before I wake the kids up in the morning or after everyone else in the house goes to bed. Some days neither of these happen and my only peace might be in the shower! You know you have those days too :) As long as I get a few minutes to myself to pray, read or reflect. I also try to be a bright point in someone's life daily.  Whether it be a simple act of kindness at the grocery store or something for my family. This can be easy to forget as we go through our busy days, but the benefits for myself and the others around me is easy to see.
My challenge to you is to use this time to refocus your priorities, to walk closer to your family, and to walk closer to God. Even after Easter, remember why you picked your Lenten sacrifice, and don't let it block the way of you getting closer to others or keep you from furthering your faith. Even if we falter, I hope that each of us will continue to refocus our daily lives and use spring as a time of readjustment to improve ourselves and life for those around us!

The 1960s Called, and Mississippi Lawmakers Answered

Through much debate over the last few months, Mississippi quickly passed it's version of the "Religious Freedom Bill" (SB2681) after its recent resurrection.
Like many others, I worry that this legislation could be the start of a slippery slope in the state of Mississippi, as it opens the door for discrimination of ANY group of people.  Many worry that the LGBT community will be the most impacted, and this could be very true.

This bill will allow discrimination throughout the public sector to LGBT patrons and to pretty much anyone else.  ANY business owner can say "I refuse to serve you because _________ goes against my beliefs."  This blank could include:
your sexuality,
your interracial marriage,
you are a female wearing pants,
your divorce,
your job at a casino,
you eat pork,
you are not wearing a head covering........
This list could go on and on.

What's even more disturbing is this bill was pushed by a leader of the Mississippi Baptist Convention. His letter to Representatives even threatened retaliation for voting against the bill. Other religious leaders in our state publicly opposed this bill. Unfortunately, I think our lawmakers caved to pressure and will be on the wrong side of history with this decision.
We as Christians are called to love, not to judge, and definitely not to decide which groups of people are allowed to be discriminated against or refused services. Hate is loud, but love is louder ya'll.....Love always wins!

Respect the Bubble

I had a little drama yesterday with kindergarten registration, so I started the day with this as my motto:

Of course it did not end that way!! (it never does when you go in with expectations)

There are things that I expect from adults that I don't think are asking too much.
We all have bad days.  We all have times when we don't handle things in the best possible way. We all make mistakes. It's how you handle yourself afterwards that shows your integrity, your leadership abilities, and your willingness to be a team player.
That being said, here are a few idea for when you screw something up:

1. Don't blame the problem on someone else. This is just going to really piss people off and quickly make you a few enemies! Luckily I work in a field that isn't considered "cut throat" on a daily basis. In fact, things run smoother when we work together as a team, so you should have no plans turn people against you.

2. Covering your butt takes a lot of time and energy. I am sure, actually I KNOW, there are better ways to spend both!

3. Admit your mistake! And do it fast. Like ripping off a bandage, get it over with. Plus if you work in an office like mine, you might win yourself the "gorilla award" for doing something ridiculously stupid! (We show how much we care about each other by making fun.....it can make the day go by faster!)

4. Fix the problem. Or at least provide some ideas of how to fix it. You jacked it up so it only makes sense that you should be a part of the solution.

Now I'm no leadership or team building guru, but I would think that these would be common sense. I would think so........
But alas, my bubble was popped today. Tomorrow is a new day and tomorrow WILL be better.
And there better be some respecting of the bubble people!!!
